Call to Catholicism
Classes for Sacramental Preparation for Adults (sometimes called the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA)) are conducted on a scheduled basis by our Parish priests and other guest lecturers. The classes are for adults who want to be baptized; baptized Christians of other faiths who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and/or becoming Catholic; and non-practicing Catholics who want to refresh their knowledge and come home; as well as baptized Catholics who have not yet received their First Communion or Confirmation.
Subject matter includes: the Sacraments, celebrating the Catholic Mass, the liturgical year, Divine Law and Moral Law, the Seven Deadly Sins, cultural and social issues, prayer life, the Ten Commandments, the Pope and Church hierarchy, symbols and gestures of Catholic worship, affection for Mary, the Saints/canonization, Catholic traditions, and more.
The Sacramental Preparation process is a spiritual journey of the candidates, together with their Godparents, sponsors, and other parishioners, which helps them grow in their faith, build and live as a community, and discern God's call in their lives.
Adults have learning needs and a learning style quite different from that of children. Adult learners are self-directed and are used to taking active roles in the their jobs and families. So in the Holy Family Sacramental Preparation for Adults Program, adults come together in groups to actively discuss the topics of Catholicism as such applies to their daily lives. And because of the different backgrounds and life situations adults are coming from, as well as their different needs, Holy Family tries to keep the process flexible so that everyone can find their place in it. Nevertheless it requires commitment to fulfill the process.
Sacramental Preparation for Adults recognizes that God stirs each of us in a unique way and that we recognize this stirring at our own pace. It supports the personal and sometimes delicate nature of each person's journey towards understanding their relationship with God and the Church. The process provides each participant with opportunities to experience the richness of the Church and then, as it unfolds, helps them to better understand God's call in their life and the ways they can respond to it.
