Understanding and accepting the Faith

Teen's greater capacity to understand their faith and make it their own makes the religious education they receive in their High School years extremely important. For those that complete all the classes in 9th and 10th Grade religious education, the Sacrament of Confirmation is available in the fall of 11th Grade. Given the diverse realities of Parish teens, and the two years required study prior to the Sacrament of Confirmation, parental engagement in the process is critical including assuring that their teens attend Mass weekly, participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly, and perform community service as required accordingly. Worship, in particular the Sunday Eucharist, has from the Church's early beginnings been the fundamental context in which faith is nurtured, stimulated and deepened; attending Mass then as a family sets good example for the years to come.

Classes are held monthly on Sundays in conjunction with and immediately following Sunday 10:30 AM Mass for two hours. Religious Ed Registration Forms and 9th - 1th Grade schedules/info pages are available online or in the Parish office. Students participating within Religious Ed at Holy Family are expected:
  • Along with their families to be full participating members of the Parish.
  • To attend Mass with their families on a regular basis.
  • To participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
  • To be committed to Religious Education along with their parents who will need to attend parental meetings and family events as scheduled within the Religious Ed program.
  • To exercise class etiquette.
  • To be respectful to/of teachers and other students.
  • To be a positive, contributing member to classroom activities and discussions.
  • To behave as appropriate to an educational environment.

Cancelation of class due to inclement weather

Ninth Grade (Confirmation 1)

Grade 9 begins preparation for Confirmation with a focus on understanding the treasure, the gifts, and the blessing that is the Church. Lessons support Parish youth as they grow in their faith and in their knowledge about the basic truths that Catholics profess. 9th Grade students are encouraged to make the mission of the Church their own and are challenged to set their heart on all that is good, holy, and true about being a young Catholic in the world today.

Tenth Grade (Confirmation 2)

Grade 10 continues preparation for Confirmation by familiarizing Parish youth with the nature of liturgy and the liturgical year. An introduction to the properties of signs, symbols, and rituals sets the groundwork for the study of individual Sacraments. Thus sessions share some of the history of the Sacraments, their meaning, the significance of symbols, and the nature of the rites. 10th Grade students are invited to actively study the Sacraments, to make connections between the sacraments and their own lives, to reflect prayerfully on the meaning of the sacraments, and to take some Sacrament-related actions. A day-long retreat during the Spring provides a capstone for the year.

As a young adult becomes ready to enter  11th Grade and if having completed all of the requirements to be confirmed, he/she has the opportunity to consciously make the choice to become a contributing member of the Church by accepting the invitation of Jesus to be His disciple. Whereas with Baptism it is often the parents' choice, Confirmation is a choice by the person her/himself as a very important measure of one's faith maturity. The Sacrament of Confirmation is not a graduation; it's the beginning of the journey as an adult in the Church.
Confirmation is deeply significant in being Catholic, not only because it is part of Church tradition, but also, and more importantly, because it is about making a promise: a promise that one will do their best to follow God along whatever path He lays before them. Confirmation is not something that can just be done in private on one's own; rather Confirmation is a public promise, so that the faith community of Holy Family can bear witness and welcome those Confirmed into their fellowship as Catholic adults.

Eleventh and Twelfth Grades

As young adults, 11th and 12th Graders are encouraged to take a self-directed active adult role in continuing Study available to Parish adults, in giving of their time and talent in Stewardship of the Parish, and in engaging in Worship and Prayer incumbent upon their newly Confirmed Catholic faith.
